Teen charged with causing death of two road maintenance workers [NSTTV]

SUNGAI PETANI: Clad in a school uniform, a teenager made an unusual stop at the Courts Complex here this morning instead of going straight to school, as he normally did.

The 17-year-old appeared in the Magistrate's Court here today to face two separate charges of reckless driving and causing the death of two road maintenance workers in Bedong last week.

The boy, who had driven his father's multi-purpose vehicle during the incident, looked calm as he was led into the courtroom at about 9am, accompanied by his family members.

In the proceeding, which was done in-camera, the boy claimed trial when the charges were read to him before Magistrate Noor Fazlina Musa.

For the first count, the boy was charged with reckless driving and causing the death of maintenance worker Siouca Chakma, 21, at Jalan Pintasan Semeling at 11.10am on May 7.

He was also charged with the same offence at the same place and time, leading to the death of another maintenance worker, Akter Kamal Hosen, 33.

The teenager was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for imprisonment of between five and 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, S. Preeyaa prosecuted while the accused was represented by Norfarahazlinda Zahari, a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

The court fixed bail at RM2,000 for each charge and set July 27 for mention.

His father posted the bail.

In the incident, Siouca Chakma died on the spot due to severe head injuries while his colleague Akter Kamal Hosen succumbed to his injuries two days later at the hospital.
