Siti Nuramira not charged today: Jawi to contact her when they are ready

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman who was charged with insulting Islam in a comedy club will not be charged under Syariah Law today.

Siti Nuramira counsel Hannann Syoffeeya Zainal Shahrir in a statement said her client was released by Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) without bail or bond.

She said Jawi would contact her client or her legal team when they are ready to charge her.

It was reported that Siti Nuramira was re-arrested by Jawi as soon as she posted her RM20,000 bail at the Sessions Court.

Nuramira was accused of insulting Islam by admitting that she was a Muslim and had memorised 15 juzuk (chapters) of the Quran, before taking off her hijab and baju kurung at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail on June 4.

She was charged under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will, or prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity on grounds of religion.

She is facing a maximum of five years' imprisonment if found guilty. The court allowed her RM20,000 bail with one surety and set Aug 18 for her case mention.
