KOTA BARU: Kelantan Road Transport Department has issued 343 summonses to foreigners caught driving vehicles belonging to Malaysians.
Its director Mohd Misuari Abdullah said the summonses were issued during series of operations conducted throughout last year.
Within the same period, he said the department seized 30 vehicles used by these foreigners.
"Initial investigation showed that they have either rented or bought the vehicles from locals.
"Some of the cases involved local employers allowing their foreign workers to drive the vehicles." he said after a new year dragnet dubbed 'Ops Khas Ambang Tahun Baru 2023' at Jalan Padang Enggang here last night.
Mohd Misuari pointed out that such was an offence especially if the foreigners turned out to be illegal immigrants.
He said foreign drivers posed great risk to other road users and the vehicle owners will have to bear the responsibility if the vehicles are involved in road crashes or other incidents.
Meanwhile, Mohd Misuari said about 100 enforcement officers took part in last night's operation, which began at 8pm and ended at midnight.
Apart from Kota Baru, similar operations were also held in Machang and Gua Musang.
He added that a total of 420 vehicles were inspected and 251 summonses were issued during the operation.
