Six cops involved in alleged extortion reassigned to desk duty

KUALA LUMPUR: Six police officers arrested for allegedly extorting RM150,000 from a group of Chinese nationals have been suspended from enforcement duty.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the police would submit the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) for action.

He said police were investigating the possible involvement of the Chinese nationals in criminal activities.

The police officers have been released on bail.

"The investigation papers will be referred to the DPP for advice and a decision will be taken regarding charges, if any.

"All of them (police officers) will be removed from enforcement duty and transferred to desk duty," he said.

The New Straits Times reported today that six policemen, including an inspector and a sergeant, were arrested after they were allegedly found to have extorted RM150,000 from a group of Chinese nationals allegedly involved in a scam operation.

The group of policemen, which includes three corporals and a constable, were arrested on Thursday and remanded for four days until Monday.

The suspects, all attached to the Serdang police headquarters, had raided a house in Jalan Bluconstellation near Mines Resort City in Seri Kembangan on Jan 30. They allegedly confronted seven Chinese nationals in the house and demanded RM150,000 from them.

A police report was lodged on March 9 and all the suspects were arrested on the same day.

Police have classified the case as extortion under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' jail, a fine or whipping upon conviction.
