ASP, six policemen arrested in extortion, molest case

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior police officer with the rank of Assistant Superintendent and six members from the Cheras Narcotics Crime Investigation Division were arrested for involvement in extortion and molesting yesterday (Oct 11).

Also arrested were three men to assist in the investigation of the incident, which allegedly occurred in a condominium in Cheras.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said they received a report from a 22-year-old woman on Oct 7, claiming she had been extorted for money and assaulted.

The incident reportedly took place on Oct 1, and upon receiving the victim's police report, three men were detained and remanded for three days and later released on police bail.

"Following that, we arrested seven individuals, including one officer with the rank of ASP and six members, including a female officer, aged between 30 and 50, yesterday (Oct 12).

"They have been remanded for three days starting today until Oct 14 to assist in the investigation under Sections 384 and 354 of the Penal Code," he said.

Rusdi was speaking to reporters after the National Sports Day event for the Kuala Lumpur police contingent today (Oct 12).

He emphasised that there would be no compromise on this issue and further investigations are ongoing.

"To date, no seizures have been made, and we are investigating the allegations regarding money transferred online," he added.

He also mentioned that they would review closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

"The report was made late, so a thorough investigation is needed to understand why the complainant reported it late," he said.

Previously, a post on a messaging app went viral, from a woman claiming to be a victim of extortion and assault by a group of individuals during a raid at a condominium unit in Cheras.

The woman alleged she was threatened by a group of police officers demanding RM150,000, which was later reduced to RM90,000 after drugs were found in her possession.

She was released after a man helped her make a payment of RM10,000, which she was required to repay in instalments with interest.
