KUALA LUMPUR: Police have proposed the prosecution of the six police officers arrested for allegedly extorting RM150,000 from a group of Chinese nationals.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the police would refer to the deputy public prosecutor for advice.
He added that the officers had also been reassigned from enforcement duties.
Hussein also denied claims that there had been a cover-up in the case.
"No such thing. That's a wild accusation.
"Since the beginning, only six were arrested in connection to the case, including the inspector.
"They have been remanded for four days.
"We have submitted the investigation paper to the deputy public prosecutor for their advice… we propose that they be charged.
"No cover-up on this," he stressed.
A Telegram group called Edisi Siasat on Tuesday claimed that an inspector linked to the case had been dropped as a suspect to cover up the involvement of another high-ranking officer.
It alleged that the high-ranking officer received a cut from the RM150,000 extorted from the Chinese nationals, who were allegedly involved in a scam ring.
Hussein said the Chinese nationals were still under investigation for any criminal activities.
The New Straits Times yesterday reported that six policemen, including an inspector and a sergeant, were arrested after they allegedly extorted RM150,000 from a group of Chinese nationals over their involvement in a scam operation.
Other policemen arrested on Thursday were three corporals and a constable.
The suspects, from the Serdang police headquarters, had raided a house in Jalan Bluconstellation near Mines Resort City in Seri Kembangan on Jan 30.
They confronted seven Chinese nationals at the house and demanded RM150,000.
A police report was lodged on March 9 and all the suspects were arrested the same day.
Police have classified the case as extortion under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10 years' jail, a fine or whipping upon conviction.
