KUALA LUMPUR: Two policemen have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a 22-year-old part-time burger seller in Klang.
South Klang police chief Assistant Commissioner Cha Hoong Fong said on Aug 6 at around 1.10am, the complainant was riding a motorcycle to deliver three burgers to a customer in Bukit Tinggi Klang.
He was then stopped by police officers in a patrol car on the Kesas Highway, approximately 500 metres before the exit to Bandar Puteri.
"During the inspection, the policemen allegedly requested a sum of cash to avoid the complainant's motorcycle from being seized.
"The motorcycle's road tax had expired on March 15, 2013, and the policemen used this violation as a pretext to demand money from the complainant," he said in a statement today.
After discussions, Cha said the complainant placed RM90 in a plastic bag containing the burgers and handed it over to them.
The police from the D7 branch of the South Klang Criminal Investigation Department arrested the policemen involved and seized related evidence on Aug 7, at around 7pm.
"The investigating officer is preparing the investigation papers and will refer the case to the deputy public prosecutor."
The case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion which carries a maximum of 10 years' imprisonment, fine, and whipping.
Cha urged anyone with information about the incident to make a report at the nearest police station or contact the South Klang district police headquarters at 03-33762222 to assist with the investigation.
