KUALA LUMPUR: The discovery of three homemade explosives, triggered by remote control, has alarmed residents of the area near Tiara Mutiara 1 condominium in Jalan Klang Lama here early this morning.
The discovery of the devices was made after a minor explosion took place in front of a shop off Jalan Puchong in the area.
No one was injured in the incident.
Police were alerted to the incident when a 27-year-old man, who runs one of the shops there, said he was informed of the blast by a security guard around 6am.
Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Amihizam Abdul Shukor said police personnel were dispatched to the scene.
He said upon checking, police discovered three white PVC pipes which had been modified into explosives.
"A closer inspection of the pipes revealed the presence of remote-controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).
"The Fire and Rescue Department, Bomb Disposal Unit, and Forensic Department also conducted an investigation which turned up fragments from the explosion at the scene.
They also found three fingerprints," he said in a statement.
Amihizam said police scoured through CCTV at the scene, which revealed the movements of the suspects, believed to be two men.
The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957, which carries a maximum imprisonment of seven years and a fine of up to RM10,000 or both if found guilty.
Police have urged those with information on the case to contact the authorities at the Brickfields police hotline at 03-2297 9222, Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or any police station.
The incident comes some six months after a blast, detonated remotely, killed a
a 28-year-old cook outside a restaurant in Pandan Indah on Dec 30 last year.
The cook was critically injured when a parcel he was lifting from the hood of his car exploded and later died in the hospital.
Police investigation later led to the arrest of a husband and wife. It was later established that the wife had an affair with the cook, and when the relationship ended, told her husband.
The couple had then concocted a plan to take revenge on the cook, leading to his death.
The woman's husband, a ceramic maker, allegedly learned how to make the homemade bomb via YouTube.
