Land and Survey Department driver fined RM10,000 for soliciting bribe

KOTA KINABALU: A 55-year-old driver was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here for soliciting money for the extension of lease of a plot of land three years ago.

Ali Hashin Nasip pleaded guilty before judge Jason Juga to two charges under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009.

An MACC statement said at 8.45am on Sept 18, 2020, Ali informed a civilian that the process of extending the lease period for their family land had been completed.

Five days earlier on Sept 13, 2020, Ali requested a bribe of RM5,000 to facilitate the application to extend the lease period.

"The court imposed a fine of RM10,000, in default of six months' imprisonment. The accused paid the fine," said MACC.

The accused works with the Kudat Land and Survey Department.

He was represented by Hampry Luaran.

Norsham Saharom served as the prosecuting officer for MACC.
