Police corporal admits to RM1,500 bribe, gets 1 day in jail and RM10,000 fine

BUTTERWORTH: A police corporal has admitted to accepting a RM1,500 bribe three years ago.

Nor Mohamad Hafizi Hafis Md Ariffin, 33, pleaded guilty to receiving the bribe from an individual in exchange for overlooking his possession of two packs of ketum juice.

The offence took place at around 1am on July 6, 2021, at the Datuk Keramat police station.

The corporal, who has been with the police force since 2011, was charged under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

Under Section 24 of the same Act, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the bribe amount, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

In court, Nor Mohamad requested a minimal sentence, expressing remorse and pledging not to repeat the offence.

However, the prosecution argued for a deterrent sentence due to the seriousness of the crime and its impact on public trust.

The court sentenced him to one day in prison and imposed a RM10,000 fine.

Should he fail to pay the fine, he will face an additional four months in prison.
