SANDAKAN: A self-employed man was charged with drug trafficking at the magistrate's court here following the discovery of 10kg syabu in a car recently.
Wong Shi Hong, 27, was accused of trafficking 10,049.9g of syabu on July 3, at 11.45am, along KM68 Jalan Sandakan - Lahad Datu, in Kinabatangan district.
The offence under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes, on conviction.
No plea was recorded from Wong who appeared before Magistrate Muhammad Azam.
The court fixed Aug 17, for further mention of the case.
Wong was ordered to be remanded further as the charge against him had no provision for bail.
Counsel Dominic Chew represented the accused, while prosecuting officer Inspector Nooraznie Bolalan prosecuted.
It was reported last week that the State Police Contingent (IPK) Narcotic Division and Kinabatangan spotted a man loading a box into a car along KM68 Jalan Sandakan- Lahad Datu on July 3.
The man was arrested after police found inside the box several packets of crystalline substance believed to be syabu weighing approximately 10kg and worth RM600,000.
