Man held over syabu worth RM1.1m seized in highway op

KUALA TERENGGANU: Police smashed a drug trafficking ring, seizing 36kg of crystal methamphetamine (syabu) worth RM1.15 million in a highway operation.

Acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted a multi-purpose vehicle on the East Coast Highway 2 near Kemaman, arresting a 29-year-old man with drug convictions.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said officers seized 35 packages of syabu, which could supply 180,000 drug users.

The operation involved collaboration between the Terengganu Narcotic Crime Investigation Department and the Bukit Aman Highway Patrol Unit (Zone East 4).

"We also froze RM681,718.73 in the suspect's bank account," he said.

He said he believed the drugs entered Malaysia through Kelantan before being transported for distribution in the Klang Valley.

The unemployed suspect had operated the trafficking route for two months.

The man remains in custody until Dec 24.
