KOTA KINABALU:Two police officers were injured after being stabbed by a man at Taman Jaya Diri, Manggatal near here yesterday.
The suspect is believed to be receiving psychiatric treatment at Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang here.
The incident occurred at 230pm yesterday.
District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said they received a complaint about a man going berserk in his house.
He said the suspect, armed with a meat cleaver, had confined his mother and sister inside their house.
The man also assaulted his sister.
"In response to the complaint, myself and the crime investigation division head, as well as other personnel headed to the location of the incident.
"Upon arrival at the scene, the suspect was persuaded to surrender, but he refused and only agreed to release his sister.
"After that, the suspect locked himself in the bedroom with his mother," he said in a statement today.
Mohd Zaidi said with no signs of the suspect surrendering or releasing his mother after two hours, the police team decided to break open the bedroom door to rescue the suspect's mother.
However, the suspect became aggressive and stabbed a senior officer and a sergeant.
"Both officers sustained injuries to their arms, heads, and right shoulders.
"The 42-year-old suspect suffered only minor injuries to his face.
"The suspect's mother did not suffer any injuries," he said.
Both injured police officers are currently receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which pertains to attempted murder, and upon conviction, carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years' imprisonment.
