Ex-convict charged with attempted rape of elderly woman, armed robbery in Perak

TAIPING: A former convict, who was just released from prison two months ago, was charged in the Sessions Court here today with the attempted rape of an elderly woman and armed robbery.

S. Saaran, 32, claimed trial to all charges read before judge Nabisha Ibrahim.

On the first charge, he is accused of attempting to rape a 75-year-old senior citizen in the living room of a house in Lorong 14 Taman Assam Maju, here, about 8.30am on Aug 15.

The offence under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

On the second charge, Saaran, armed with a knife, allegedly robbed the same woman of RM10 and a gold necklace, causing injury at the same place, time and date.

The offence under Section 394 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

On the third charge, Saaran allegedly robbed the elderly woman's son-in-law, 55, of RM5,000 and a Honda car at the same place, time and date.

The offence under 392 of the Penal Code carries up to 14 years in jail and whipping, or fine, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Syuhada Muhammad Lutfi prosecuted while the accused was not represented.

For the attempted rape charge, Nur Syuhada asked that bail be set at RM30,000 with an additional condition that the accused must stay away from the victim.

For the armed robbery charges, she offered RM20,000 bail with the same additional condition.

During mitigation, Saaran pleaded for a lower bail as he was jobless and had just got out of prison two months ago.

Nabisha set bail at RM30,000 for all charges with one surety and ordered the accused to stay away from the victim and witnesses in the case.

She also set Sept 25 for mention.
