Former lecturer, ex-convict among three charged with promoting IS [WATCH]

JOHOR BARU: A former lecturer from a public higher education institution and an ex-convict were among three people charged at two separate Sessions Courts today for promoting and possessing materials linked to the Islamic State terror group.

One of the accused is 70-year-old Abdullah Daud. The former lecturer was charged in the Sessions Court here today with four charges including promoting the ideology of violence linked to IS terrorist group, between September 2023 and June this year.

Abdullah nodded his head when all four charges were read to him by the court interpreter before Judge Fatimah Zahari.

No plea was recorded from him as the matter is within the jurisdiction of the High Court.

For the first charge, Abdullah was accused of promoting terrorist acts by spreading the ideology of violence associated with the IS terrorist group. Abdullah was also charged with allowing meetings to take place at his house in Kampung Melayu Kangkar Tebrau.

He was accused of committing both offences at his house between Sept 3, 2023 and April 14, last year.

Abdullah was also charged with possessing two books titled "Hakikat Dienul Islam" and "Tarbiyah Jihadiyah," which are items containing elements of violence related to the IS group. He was also charged with possessing two digital books and two videos containing violent content related to IS on his mobile phone.

He was accused of committing these offenses at his residence between June 23 and 28 last year.

In the same court, a 48-year-old contractor was also charged with possessing items related to IS group on his mobile phone and laptop.

No plea was recorded from Mohamad Awang, who just nodded when the charge was read out to him. He was charged with committing the offense at his house in Taman Daya, around 7.05 am on June 23 last year.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Rullizah Abdul Majid and Lina Hanini Ismail prosecuted, while neither of the two accused were represented.

The judge ordered that no bail be granted to either accused. Both cases will be transferred to the High Court in Kuala Lumpur which have been fixed for case management on Sept 18.

Meanwhile, in Kelantan, a former prisoner was charged at the Sessions Court in Kota Baru today with four counts of possessing materials linked to the IS terrorist group last month.

Nik Mohd Shalahuddin Zakaria, 40, only nodded his head when the charges were read to him before Judge Abdullah.

No plea was recorded, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the first and second charges, Nik Mohd Shalahuddin was accused of possessing 1,020 images, 26 videos, and 321 articles in PDF format on a Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro mobile phone.

He was also accused of having 378 images, 36 videos, and 244 articles in PDF format on an Oppo A16K mobile phone. These items are linked to terrorist activities and the IS terrorist group.

He was accused of committing both offences at Kampung Senang, Kota Jembal, at 9.15am on June 10.

For the third charge, Nik Mohd Shalahuddin was accused of supporting the IS terrorist group by using a Facebook account under the name Ahmad Saif Al-Islam Il at Bukit Aman police headquarters, Kuala Lumpur at 10.15pm.

As for the fourth charge, the man was accused to admit to be a member of the IS group by performing a baiah ceremony with Abu Hafs Al-Hashimi Al-Qurashi, the IS leader.

He was accused of committing the act at Kampung Senang, Kota Jembal on June 10.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shafiq Hasim prosecuted while the accused was not represented.

Zulkifli later fixed Aug 19 as mention pending submission of report from experts and to decide the application to transfer the case to the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.
