PASIR GUDANG: A 43-year-old suspected smuggler was arrested with RM25,700 worth of cigarettes and liquor on which duties were unpaid, in Plentong, Masai, near here yesterday.The Simpang Renggam General Operation Force (GOF) officers stopped the man who looked nervous driving a beat-up Proton car.
Upon checking the car, they found 63 cartons of illicit cigarettes and four cartons of alcohol of various brands including Carlberg, Blanc Kronenbourg, DS Strong and Skol, among others, in the boot.The suspect was handed over to the police to facilitate investigations under Section 116C of Customs Act 1967.
Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the suspect, who has been remanded for 10 days, was spotted at 5pm by the GOF and Battalion 5 policemen, during a routine crime prevention operation.Police seized the car and the cigarettes which included 37 cartons of John D-Blends, Mevious Superlight (12 cartons), Canyon -Blast and Premium (12 cartons), and four cartons of various 500ml beer brands.
It is learnt police mounted frequent road blocks and crime prevention checks in the area which is prone to smuggling due to its location within the port vicinity and influx of foreign workers.
