Suspected smugglers remanded for 3 days in cooking oil smuggling probe

PASIR MAS: Two men suspected of being smugglers were remanded for three days beginning today in order to assist with the investigation into the smuggling of 1kg cooking oil in polybags.

The remand order was obtained at Pasir Mas magistrate's court by the State Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

The remand order which ends on Sept 19, was obtained before magistrate Mohd Idzham Naim Che Ani.

The case against the two, both in their 30s, is investigated under Supply Control Act 1961.

They were arrested by members of the General Operations Force (GOF) in an operation at Kampung Peyuk near Tumpat today.

In the 2.30pm operation, the GOF members seized 8,500kg of 1kg cooking oil in polybags from the men.

The subsidised items were about to be smuggled to Thailand when they were seized.

Also seized were two vehicles which were used to transport the goods.

The two, both locals, are believed to be members of a smuggling syndicate.
