Police open criminal probe into 10 roadblock cops found with RM3,753 among them

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened another investigation paper into the 10 cops who had RM3,753 in cash stashed in a police car while they were on duty at a roadblock.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the new investigation was under the Minor Offences Act, and was in addition to ongoing disciplinary action against them.

"Yes, an investigation paper has been opened under Section 29 (1) of the Minor Offences Act," he said when contacted by the New Straits Times.

On Feb 4, the policemen were manning a roadblock to nab drunk drivers in Petaling Jaya when the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Unit (JIPS) conducted a spotcheck and found more than RM3,000 in cash in a nearby patrol car.

Among the policemen being investigated are an inspector, as well as sergeants, corporals, lance corporals, and constables. All of them have been suspended from their duties pending the investigation.

The Bukit Aman JIPS team found that one traffic police sergeant sitting in a police patrol vehicle had more than RM3,000 in his wallet and more cash stashed in a summons book in the car.

Hussein said current rules state policemen on enforcement duties could only carry up to RM100 cash and they would need to declare any larger amount to their supervisors before heading out on duty.

"This procedure is in line with the Inspector-General of Police's Standing Order (IGSO) and the IGP's Administrative Instructions," he said.
