(Updated) Aman Palestin chairman and CEO maintain innocence in 131kg gold purchase case

SHAH ALAM: Aman Palestin Bhd chairman and its chief executive officer (CEO) were charged with deceiving its trustees over the purchase of 131 kilogrammes of gold worth more than RM33 million today.

Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman and Awang Sufian Awang Piut, however, pleaded not guilty when they were jointly charged of fraud before Sessions Court judge Datuk Anita Harun.

The duo was charged with 19 counts of deceitfully deceiving the trustees of Aman Palestin Bhd into handing over cash amounting to RM39,150,000 to Samudra Champa for the purchase of gold weighing 131 kilogrammes, whereas the actual purchase price of the gold was only RM33,399,970 between Sept 24, 2021, and July 14, last year.

The 19 counts are:

* Sept 24, 2021

Deceived the trustees to hand over RM500,000 to purchase 2,000 gramme of gold.

Actual purchase price: RM 474,067.

* Sept 28, 2021

Deceived the trustees to hand over RM1 million to purchase 4,000 gramme of gold.

Actual purchase price: RM947,851.

* Sept 29, 2021

Deceived the trustees to hand over RM1 million to purchase 4,000 gramme of gold.

Actual purchase price: RM 940,356.

* Sept 30, 2021

Deceived the trustees to hand over RM1 million to purchase 4,000 gramme of gold.

Actual purchase price: RM 938,680.

* Oct 4, 2021

Deceived the trustees to hand over RM3 million to purchase 9,000 gramme of gold.

Actual purchase price: RM 2,215,422.

The offence falls under Section 420 of the Penal Code which carries a jail sentence of not be less than one year and not more than 10 years and with whipping, and shall also be liable to fine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib prosecuted while counsel Siti Mardhiyyah Zamani appeared for the accused.

The court set RM1 million bail against the accused and fixed March 13 for mention.

Earlier, Akram said RM500,000 will be deposited today while the remaining will be submitted within a month.

The accused also need to surrender their passport until the disposal of the case.
