Taiwan family stunned after Indonesian domestic helper gives birth

TAIPEI: A family in Taiwan was stunned after their Indonesian domestic worker unexpectedly gave birth in their home recently.

According to The Storm Media report, the family, living in northern Hsinchu, Taiwan, was unaware the domestic worker was pregnant as she always wore loose-fitting clothes.

Family said the Indonesian woman was hired five months ago to care for the elderly grandmother.

They released CCTV footage showing the woman giving birth on the elderly woman's bed on Sept 11.

The elderly woman, seated in a wheelchair, witnessed her domestic worker giving birth alone, and realised what had happened when she heard the sound of a baby crying.

"Taiwanese law does not require pregnancy tests for the hiring of foreign workers," said the owner of a social media account that uploaded the footage.

"The helper was supposed to have a medical check-up before coming to Taiwan, but she allegedly used her friend's medical documents to pass the screening for migrant workers.

"Now, we are responsible for caring for both the helper and her baby."

Local regulations state employers who dismiss a pregnant domestic worker or worker that has given birth may face penalties of up to NT$1.5 million (RM200,339) and lose their eligibility to hire new workers for two years.

The Taiwan International Family and Employer Association said it would send the baby back to the father in Indonesia.

"The woman will continue working with the Taiwanese family.

"Health insurance protection benefits are available to foreign workers in Taiwan and their newborns," said the association.
