TELUK INTAN: A lorry driver who was brought before the Magistrate's Court here today on charges of stabbing his stepsister with a knife last Monday, has pleaded not quilty to the charge.
The accused, L Thiyagaraj, 52, pleaded not guilty to the charges read before Magistrate T Ashvinii.
According to the charge sheet, the father of one, is accused of intentionally causing injuries to L Dewi, 31, using a vegetable cutting knife at a house in Taman Muhibbah here at 8 pm, last Monday.
The accused is charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same code.
If convicted, he could be jailed up to three years and/or be fined, or whipped.
The accused may also be charged under Section 326A of the Penal Code, which allows for up to a six-year jail term.
The prosecution was represented byInspector Noor Aisyah Mat Isa, while the accused was represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), Faustina Francis.
The court allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM3,000 with one surety and an additional condition to not meet with the victim until the case is settled.
The court also set May 9 for the next mention of the case for document submission and appointment of a lawyer.
The arrest of the accused followed a police report made by the victim claiming injuries to her back as a result of being stabbed by her step-brother.
The incident occurred following an altercation between the victim and the accused.
