Kelantan immigration busts fake UNHCR card syndicate [NSTTV]

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Immigration Department believes its has crippled a syndicate offering fake United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards with the arrest of two Myanmar nationals.

Department's enforcement division chief Ruzaana Mohamed said the two were detained in an operation at Kampung Changgal, Pasir Puteh.

The duo are suspected to be the syndicate's agents.

"In our operation codenamed Ops Sapu/Kutip about 10pm on Friday night, we first raided a house in Kampung Changgal and detained the 28-year-old suspect and his 30-year-old friend.

"From the suspects, we seized the money, the box, the laptops and several UNHCR forged documents.

"During further checks from house to house, we detained the four Myanmars for entering Malaysia without proper travel documents," she told a Press conference here today.

Ruzaana said initial investigation showed that the two suspects have been active in selling the fake forms to foreigners since three years ago.

"We suspect they have been making a lot of profit from this job. It is estimated the two have received about RM2,000 for each application.

"One of the two suspects was also found with a genuine UNHCR card," she added.

Ruzaana said the department believed the two have been promoting the fake forms for UNHCR cards to foreigners via social media.

"We suspect there are others involved and we will track down other members of their network" she said.

She added the case was the first detected by the department this year.

She said the six Myanmar nationals have been sent to the department's detention centre in Tanah Merah.
