Fake MCs syndicate busted, six arrested

JOHOR BARU: The police detained six individuals last week to aid in investigating the suspected sale of fake medical certificates (MC).

Johor Baru Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said they received a report on the fake MCs at 10.05am on Oct 17 from a 36-year-old local man.

Acting on the information, a task force from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) arrested three local men in Iskandar Puteri, Plentong, and Skudai on Oct 21.

"After the arrests, a CCID team from Johor Baru Utara district police and the Johor Police and the state headquarters made a second round of arrests, detaining one local man and two local women in Skudai and Masai," he said in a statement today.

Balveer said the authorities seized 1,363 suspected fake MCs, seven bank cards, seven mobile phones, cash amounting to RM40,000, and a motorcycle.

It was believed that the syndicate was selling fake MCs to private company workers and factory workers around the city.

"All suspects aged between 24 and 31 were remanded from Oct 21 to 27, and on Oct 24, two of them have been charged in court," he added.

The case is investigated under Sections 420, 471, and 468 of the Penal Code. Balveer said investigations were still ongoing to charge the remaining four suspects.

He advised the public not to engage in falsifying government documents as it was a serious crime and could be prosecuted under existing laws.

"Anyone affected by this matter should come forward to file a report at the nearest police station," he added.
