JOHOR BARU: A former mayor was arrested for alleged corruption by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) this afternoon.
According to MACC sources, the 63-year-old suspect is a former mayor of a local council in the state, and was arrested at their office in Kluang, Johor.
"The suspect was arrested at around 4pm today," said the source.
"It is understood that the arrest was related to the suspect's tenure as mayor from around 2020 to 2021.
"During that period, the suspect allegedly received more than RM1 million in bribes from contractors as a reward for approving projects.
"The suspect will be brought to the Johor Baru Sessions Court 1 (Corruption Special) at 8.30am tomorrow with 12 charges," he said in a statement here today.
Meanwhile, Johor MACC director, Datuk Azmi Alias, confirmed the arrest when contacted.
The case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009.
