SEMPORNA: The authorities will investigate a viral video of a man caught using a speargun in the waters here.
Sabah Fisheries director Azhar Kassim commented on a viral 29-second video showing a man caught red-handed using a speargun to shoot fish.
The man had also touched a green turtle, which is listed as a totally protected species under the amended Wildlife Conservation Enactment.
According to the caption, the incident is believed to involve a local dive centre in Semporna.
"Spearguns are illegal gear and are prohibited for use anywhere. We have not issued any licences for capturing seafood using spearguns.
"Using spearguns is considered illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing," he said in a statement.
Azhar also said that they will take action against the case and will raise awareness, especially among tour operators.
Meanwhile, Reef Check Malaysia programme manager, Adzmin Fatta, said the non-governmental organisation had shared the report with relevant government agencies.
"I know that using spearguns is illegal. Divers are not supposed to do this while diving because it is dangerous and further contributes to reef damage.
"Let's hope they will investigate and take proper actions as the report comes from concerned professional guides in the waters off Mabul, near Semporna," he said.
Adzmin also said Reef Check Malaysia will continue working with relevant government bodies, especially the Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment Ministry, to promote Green Fins, which is a good and sustainable practice during water activities.
