KUALA LUMPUR: A social enterprise helping refugees fell victim to scammers who used forged documents to place catering orders for 500 people.
Social enterprise PichaEats co-founder Suzanne Ling said the scammers claimed to represent a local university and that they were looking for a caterer for a 500-pax event.
"We believed them and signed all the documents and proceeded with the orders," she told the New Straits Times.
"But it turned out to be a scam because there was actually no event and the documents were forged.
"15 chefs from the refugee community were badly affected as they had purchased the ingredients to prepare meals for the aforementioned event," she said.
She said that they later found out that another catering company had faced the same issue a day earlier, resulting in significant financial losses.
Ling said they will lodge a police report and will notify the university that scammers were misusing their name.
