JOHOR BARU: Police arrested two men after a motorcycle was stolen and sold off at a bargain price on social media.
The theft was reported by a 35-year-old local man at 11.56am yesterday. Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the suspects were arrested within 24 hours of the victim filing a police report.
The victim reported his motorcycle stolen after leaving it parked at a building in the city.
"From 10.20pm that night until 1.50am the next day, officers from the D4 Crime Investigation Division of the South Johor Bahru District Police Headquarters conducted raids at three locations, including Larkin and Pekan Nanas, Pontian," Raub said.
"During the operation, police arrested two local men, aged 28 and 29, suspected of theft and possession of stolen goods. They seized motorcycle keys, a fake vehicle ownership certificate, and the stolen motorcycle," he added.
Initial investigations found the suspects used an app to forge fake vehicle ownership certificates, altering the original owner's name to their own.
"They then advertised the motorcycles on social media for prices between RM1,400 and RM1,500," Raub said.
"The arrest of the first suspect also resolved three other motorcycle theft cases in this area. Records show the first suspect has five prior criminal offences, while the second suspect has none.
"Both suspects are currently held for three days to assist in the investigation under Section 379A of the Penal Code," he added
