Civil servant held in Penang over abuse of position

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a civil servant suspected of abusing her position by recommending a company which she had interests in for a research sample supply project worth about RM20,000.

A source said the suspect, in her 40s, was arrested at 4pm yesterday after giving a statement at the MACC office here.

The suspect was taken to the magistrate's court here this morning. Magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin issued a seven-day remand order for the suspect, effect until July 25.

"This arrest follows the arrest of a company director and another individual last Wednesday in connection with the same case.

"Initial investigations indicated that the suspect is believed to have committed the offence in 2022," the source said.

State MACC director Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
