Six arrested, 57 motorcycles seized in illegal racing crackdown

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested six motorcyclists, seized 57 motorcycles, and issued 87 summonses in an operation against illegal street racing along Jalan Skudai and Pantai Lido here, yesterday.

Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the six motorcyclists, aged between 18 and 28, were arrested for racing against each other and performing dangerous stunts, putting themselves and other motorists at risk.

He said Jalan Skudai and Pantai Lido were known hotspots for illegal street racing involving Mat Rempits, especially on weekends.

During the operation, codenamed Ops Samseng Jalanan, police inspected 72 individuals and 65 vehicles between 5pm and 3am yesterday.

Fifty-seven motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which allows authorities to impound vehicles to prevent continued offences.

"We issued 87 traffic summonses for various offences, including driving without a licence, vehicle modifications, and other violations," he said in a statement.
