Kluang cops arrest 7 in street racing crackdown

KLUANG: A six-day police traffic enforcement operation targeting illegal street racing concluded with the arrest of seven men, including a 15-year-old teenager.

The teenager was allegedly involved in illegal racing.

Police also seized 16 motorcycles and issued 163 summonses for traffic offences.

During the crackdown since Oct 29, which ended yesterday, traffic police officers inspected 138 vehicles and checked 168 motorists' documentation.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said the summonses were issued for traffic offences, with a focus on curbing illegal racing.

Six men, aged between 15 and 22, were detained under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for involvement in illegal racing.

Their motorcycles were confiscated.

"An 18-year-old man was arrested under Section 108 of the same act for using a fake licence plate, and his motorcycle was also seized. "Drug tests conducted on all detainees returned negative," Bahrin said in a statement today.

All suspects were tested for drug abuse, but they were all tested negative.

The 16 motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for illegal exhaust modifications.

Bahrin said similar operations would continue to ensure road safety, especially during holiday periods.

He advised the public, particularly youths, against illegal racing due to the risks it posed to themselves and other road users.
