KUALA LUMPUR: A 20-year-old nursery worker who has been reported missing for nearly two weeks is believed to be safe.
Nur Shafila Suaib was reported missing by her family on July 16.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said although police have contacted the individual and her family, they want to see her in person.
"We want to see her physically to determine if she is safe and take a statement from her.
"I have spoken to the Cheras police and told them that we cannot just accept that she is okay based on WhatsApp messages or a phone call," he said after witnessing the handing over of duties of the Dang Wangi police chief today.
He said based on current investigations, the woman lives in Kampung Sri Malaysia with her family.
"We found that she had a misunderstanding with her sister before she disappeared and could not be contacted."
Meanwhile Rusdi said his personnel would comply with the recent directive from the inspector-general of police to immediately accept reports on missing persons.
"We will no longer wait for 24 hours before accepting a report.
"We understand that time is of the essence as we have observed through the Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah case in Selangor and the abduction of Albertine Leo in Johor."
Rusdi said he was also aware of cases where individuals leave after misunderstandings with their family members.
"They fight and then turn off their phone and leave the house. Subsequently a missing persons report is lodged.
"We will still accept reports. but we will then go through our process of investigation on a case to case basis."
