GEORGE TOWN: A hardware store worker was charged in the magistrate's court today with assaulting a police officer and separately with drug possession.
The accused, Khir Chin Seong, 44, pleaded not guilty to using criminal force against Constable Mohamad Syazwan Alif Mohd Sirah by speeding on his motorcycle and hitting the officer.
According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred at the Sungai Dua health clinic in the Northeast District on July 30 at 8.30am.
Khor is charged under Section 353 of the Penal Code, carrying a maximum penalty of two years in prison, a fine, or both if convicted.
Inspector Mohd Adi Uzairi Mohd Basri prosecuted, while Khor was unrepresented.
The prosecution offered bail at RM8,000, but Khor requested a lower amount, citing his RM2,000 monthly income and his need to support his father.
Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and scheduled the case for re-mention on Sept 11.
In the Sessions Court, Khor pleaded guilty to possessing 10.35g of heroin.
This offence took place at the Relau Petronas station on Jalan Paya Terubong on July 31 at 10.35am.
The charge falls under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39A(1) of the same act, which mandates two to five years in prison and three to nine strokes of caning if convicted.
Assistant Superintendent Siti Hajar Jaafar prosecuted the drug possession case, and no bail was allowed.
The court set the next mention date for Oct 7, pending the chemical report.
On Aug 1, police arrested a man believed to be an addict, a day after he knocked into a police constable during the Op Tapis Khas near the health clinic in Sungai Dua.
The incident caused the constable to sustain injuries to his body and head.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid said the 44-year-old man was detained in Air Itam following tip off and surveillance by the police.
He said, in the 8.20am incident on Tuesday, a police team conducted Op Tapis Khas after receiving information about drug sales to addicts receiving methadone treatment at the health clinic.
