[UPDATED] Kerambit-wielding man gets 14 days jail, claims trial for mischief [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A nasi lemak seller who brandished a kerambit during a football match was sentenced to 14 days jail by the Sessions Court.

Judge Norina Zainol Abidin sentenced Muhammad Nur Iman Shafie Mohd Sulin after he pleaded guilty to the offence today.

The 22-year-old, however, claimed trial to committing mischief by fire.

The court ordered the accused to serve his jail sentence today.

According to the charge, the nasi lemak seller was accused of displaying a kerambit in a manner that would endanger the safety of others.

The offence was alleged to have occurred at the KLFA Football Centre, Jalan 6/6 Desa Melawati, Wangsa Maju at 12.45am on Aug 4.

He was charged under Section 336 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment or a fine of up to RM500 upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nidzuwan Abd Latif urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence against the accused.

"This case has received public attention and a fitting punishment should be handed out to the accused to send a clear message to the community," he said.

Lawyer Muhammad Syawal Mohd Razak, who appeared for the accused, pleaded for a minimum sentence, stating that his client was remorseful and sought a second chance.

"With this guilty plea, it saves the prosecution time, and my client is truly remorseful and promises not to repeat the offence. My client also apologises and requests a minimum sentence as a lesson," he said.

Meanwhile, the accused pleaded not guilty to a charge of mischief in an incident outside an entertainment club near Jalan Yap Kwan Seng three months ago.

He was accused of committing mischief by fire by throwing four Molotov cocktails at the club, causing damage to the front of the premises at 2.17am on May 9.

He was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 14 years' jail term and fine upon conviction.

The prosecutor asked the court to impose a RM15,000 bail, while Haziq Aizuddin Subhi who represented the accused requested a lower bail, citing that his client had provided full cooperation during the investigation.

The court set RM12,000 bail with one surety and fixed Sept 25 for mention.

It was reported that police detained a 22-year-old man and his girlfriend following an incident where he allegedly brandished a 'kerambit' during a football match at the KLFA Football Centre last Monday.

Police arrested the man and his 21-year-old girlfriend at his house in Klang on Aug 8.

A team from the district's Criminal Investigation Division questioned the couple before the suspect admitted to brandishing a kerambit in self-defence during the match.

Images of the initial incident had gone viral on social media.
