IPOH: Police have detained a couple and another individual over the abandonment of a newborn girl near rubbish bins in Pekan Titi Serong, Parit Buntar.
Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said they were arrested after police found inconsistencies in the reports filed by two men.
"The baby was actually the child of one of the men who reported the incident," Aziz said, adding that the child was the result of an illicit relationship the man had with a 20-year-old woman living in Tanjung Piandang.
"Following this admission, the police have detained two men (the father and his friend), aged 24 and 22 respectively, as well as the woman, who works at a factory in Parit Buntar," he said.
Azizi was speaking at the Perak Police headquarters here today.
He said the two men had initially reported the discovery of the baby girl in Pekan Titi Serong at 5.45pm on Wednesday.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth of a child with the intent of abandoning the baby.
Azizi said the would also be investigated for allegedly filing a false report.
"We managed to detect the false report made by the two men within 24 hours. As of now, the baby girl is still at Parit Buntar Hospital," he said.
Yesterday, it was reported that the newborn girl, with her umbilical cord still attached, was found abandoned near dustbins in Titi Serong, Parit Buntar.
Azizi said the baby, weighing 2.1kg, and was discovered by passer by in a basin and wrapped in a towel.
