Police strengthen border security to counter armed robbery gang

KOTA BARU: Police have stepped up its border security to ensure members of an African armed robbery gang do not sneak out from the country through Kelantan.

State police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said all district police chiefs especially those situated along the Kelantan/Thai border, have been told to be on alert.

"The state police are aware of the shootout incident in Subang yesterday which killed an African suspect.

"Bukit Aman yesterday stated that all border exit points have been alerted about the 10 more African suspects.

"As a state that is located close to the border, we also take the necessary measure, and have ordered all district stations as well as other agencies to be on alert in case these suspects tried to sneak out through Kelantan's exit points," he added.

Yesterday, an African suspect, believed to be a member of a robbery gang that has been active since 2018 and responsible for RM8 million in losses, was shot dead in Subang Jaya.

The gang, believed to consist of 10 armed African men, is known for targeting victims through fraudulent transactions.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the suspect was killed in a shootout on Jalan PJS 9/1.

In the incident, which occurred around 7pm, two bullets fired by the suspect hit a police vehicle.

"This group is armed and highly dangerous. We recovered a revolver, and the suspect fired five shots at police, but none struck the officers," he said.

He added authorities are continuing to track the gang, which remains active in the Klang Valley.

Shuhaily said all border exit points have been alerted about the suspect, who may attempt to change passports.
