Diesel smuggling: MACC nabs enforcement officer over bribes

KUALA LUMPUR: An enforcement officer in Kuching has been remanded for six days on suspicion of accepting bribes from a diesel smuggling syndicate.

Sources said the suspect was detained at the Sarawak Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office about 3.25pm yesterday.

"The arrest follows Op Liter, conducted by the MACC's Special Operations Division, at an oil storage depot in Sungai Bidut, Sibu, on Sunday.

"The suspect is believed to have received bribes to protect the smuggling of subsidised diesel and to prevent legal action," the source said.

MACC Special Operation Division senior director Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman confirmed the arrest, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

He did not rule out the possibility of further action and additional arrests in the near future.
