MACC arrests enforcement officer over alleged RM80k bribe in Sosma case

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained an enforcement officer for allegedly demanding an RM80,000 bribe from a woman, claiming it would help secure the release of her husband, who was detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Sources revealed that the male suspect, in his 40s, contacted the woman on Nov 30 following her husband's arrest.

"During the phone conversation, the suspect requested about RM80,000 in exchange for altering statements to facilitate her husband's release from Sosma detention.

"The suspect also asked for an advance payment of RM25,000, and the woman transferred about RM3,000 via e-wallet," the source said.

The source also said that on Monday, the suspect contacted the woman again, demanding an additional RM2,000 in cash.

"The woman then handed over RM1,000 to the suspect during a meeting at a petrol station in Sungai Dua at 2pm today, before he was arrested," the source added.

Penang MACC director Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

He also said the suspect would be brought to the George Town magistrate's court tomorrow morning for a remand application.
