Singaporean, girlfriend face death penalty for drug trafficking

JOHOR BARU: A 31-year-old Singaporean and his girlfriend are facing the death penalty after they were charged at the magistrate's court yesterday with trafficking more than three kilogrammes of drugs two weeks ago.

Brayden Ong and Wang Wee Ching, 38, who is a local, nodded their heads to indicate they understood the charges which were read to them before Magistrate A Shaarmini.

According to the charge sheet, the couple was jointly charged with trafficking about 2,667g of methamphetamine and 457.1g of MDMA power at a house in Jalan Ekoflora 3/18, Taman Ekoflora here at 3.30pm on Aug 17.

The charge was framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B(2)(a) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

They face the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

The couple was also charged with possessing 1.85g of nimetazepam and 2,240ml of MDMA in liquid form at the same house, time, and day.

They were charged under Seksyen 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 before Magistrate Syuhada Shamsudin.

Meanwhile, Wang was also charged with two counts of trafficking more than one kilogrammes of drugs.

No plea was recorded when the charges were read to her in Mandarin by the court interpreter before Magistrate R Salini.

According to the charge, Wang was accused of trafficking 1,574g of MDMA at two separate locations in Taman Bukit Indah at 10.55pm on Aug 17 and in Taman Istimewa at 11.20pm on the same day.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Nurain Syafiqeen Mohd Rozi, Siti Fatimah Mamu and Adriana Azrin prosecuted, while the accused were not represented.

The cases were fixed for mention on Oct 29 and Nov 27.
