Ex-convict faces death penalty for trafficking marijuana [WATCH]

KANGAR: A former convict could face the death penalty or life imprisonment with caning after being charged at the Magistrate's Court for trafficking 2.85 kilogrammes of marijuana in Padang Besar on Aug 18.

The accused, Yusfazli Yusof, 32, from Felda Mata Ayer, Padang Besar, who was released from prison in February, nodded in understanding but did not enter a plea when the charges were read before Magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor.

According to the charge, Yusfazli was found to have trafficked the marijuana in front of an insurance agent's shop on Jalan Padang Besar.

The offence was allegedly committed at 12.05pm on Aug 18.

The accused is charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty under Section 39B(2) of the same act.

Deputy Superintendent Musa Ujang prosecuted, while the accused was not represented.

Ana Rozana ruled that no bail would be offered to the accused.

The court set Dec 5 as the next mention date, pending a chemistry report.

On Aug 20, the media reported an ex-convict who was released from prison in February 2024 has been arrested for possessing 2.85kg of marijuana worth RM9,300 on Jalan Padang Besar here.
