PUTRAJAYA: Police are tracking several people in their probe into a human trafficking syndicate that allegedly involved former deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim and her spouse.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said police were also looking for a man with the title of Datuk Seri, who was alleged to have been involved in the crime.
"Our probe into the alleged involvement of the former deputy minister covers only claims of human trafficking.
"We are also looking for the Datuk Seri mentioned in an article, as well as the writers of the article from Indonesia. This is so we can record their statements."
He said this after the Homeland Security Conference here.
He said only three statements had been recorded and that police were checking whether anyone had fled after the claims were made.
"We are also checking (bank) accounts for the investigation."
When asked about the investigation into Justice For Myanmar's human trafficking report, which implicated several people, including those from Malaysia, Razarudin said police had been conducting an investigation since July.
Last Wednesday, a politician, who's also a former deputy minister, is believed to have been involved as the mastermind behind a human trafficking syndicate operating in Myanmar.
Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) secretary-general Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim was reported to have said that the woman, along with her husband, held key positions as security chairmen of a company and was believed to have been involved since early 2020.
Dr Mashitah, in a Facebook post on Thursday, denied the allegation.
"I have made a police report and given my statement to Bukit Aman on the outrageous allegations made by the Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation linking me to the activities.
"I deny any involvement in those activities. I will not hesitate to take legal action against those who try to associate me with this falsehood."
