Man faces charges for weapons, assault rifle parts

KANGAR: An unemployed man was charged in the Sessions Court here today with five counts of possessing an imitation firearm and weapon components at a restaurant in Kangar in July.

The 52-year-old accused, Tan Ying Hao, claimed trial after the charges were read out in Mandarin before judge Norsalha Hamzah by a court interpreter.

According to the first charge, Tan was found in possession of six components of an AR-15 rifle without a valid license or permit.

For the second charge, the accused was found with two components of an M-16 rifle, also without a valid license or permit.

The third charge stated that the accused was in possession of 32 rounds of ammunition without a valid license or permit.

For the fourth charge, Tan was found in possession of dangerous weapons, specifically two swords measuring 77cm and 61cm, without proper authorisation.

The final charge stated that the accused was in possession of a black imitation pistol without proper authorisation.

Tan was allegedly found committing these offences at a restaurant in Taman Perlis, Kangar, around 12.40am on July 15.

For the first to third charges, as well as the fifth, the accused was charged under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison or a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

The fourth charge was framed under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries a penalty of between five and 10 years in prison upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Jodia Poh Yi Tying did not offer bail, saying the accused also has other ongoing cases in Alor Star.

Defence lawyer Widyaevasari Mohd Kanifiah did not object.

The court then set Oct 11 for case mention.
