TAPAH: Police have arrested a man from Johor for posting defamatory content on his social media account against one of the policemen who died in the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor.
District police chief Superintendent Mohd Naim Asnawi said the arrest was made following a report lodged by a relative of the late Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar at 12.41pm on Aug 29.
"The relative, in the report, said that the man had posted defamatory comments on his Facebook account, which hurt the family's feelings," he said in a statement.
Acting on the report, Mohd Naim said a team of policemen from the Tapah police headquarters arrested the account owner under the name Wan Qayyum at his home in Masai, Johor, at around 8pm on Sept 5.
"During the arrest, we also seized the man's mobile phone," he said adding that the man has been remanded for four days until Sep 9 to facilitate the investigation into the case.
The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for using network facilities to transmit offensive communication and Section 14 of the Minor Offenses Act 2001.
He also advised the public to always comply with the law and avoid engaging in any criminal activities.
"Members of the public with information regarding any criminal activities can contact the Tapah District Police Headquarters Operation Room at 05-4011222," he said.
According to a Facebook conversation, the man claimed that the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station occurred because the two policemen killed in the incident had taken bribes.
In the 2.54am incident on May 17, two policemen, Ahmad Azza and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said were killed and another was seriously injured by a 'lone wolf' attacker, aged 21. The suspect was later shot and killed at the scene.
