Ulu Tiram police station attacker's brother claims trial to supporting IS

KUALA LUMPUR: The elder brother of the man who attacked the police station in Ulu Tiram, Johor, in May today claimed trial to charges linked to the Islamic State terror group.

Food delivery worker Radin Romyullah Radin Imran, 34, entered his plea after the two charges were read out to him before High Court judge K. Muniandy.

On the first charge, he was accused of supporting IS by pledging his bai'ah (loyalty) to a leader of the terror group, Abu Bakar Al-Baghdadi.

The charge under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code provides for life in prison, or not more than 40 years; a fine; and, for the items used or intended to be used to commit an offence to be confiscated upon conviction.

On the second charge, he was accused of possessing a hard disk which contained materials related to IS and acts of terror.

The charge under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the same code provides for a maximum seven-year jail term; or a fine. Under the section, the items used in the commission of the offence must also be confiscated.

Radin Romyullah was alleged to have committed the offences at a house in Jalan Rabani in Kampung Sungai Tiram, Johor, at the end of 2014, and between May 17 and 19 this year.

Deputy public prosector Yazid Mustaqim Roslan prosecuted while lawyer Arief Firdaus Asyikin stood for the accused.

The court set Nov 15 for case management.

Last month, Radin Romyullah's mother, Rosna Jantan, 59, claimed trial to a charge of intentionally omitting information relating to the IS that she was supposed to provide to the authorities.

Rosna, a Singaporean, made her plea before High Court judge Datuk Noorin Badaruddin.

She was accused of deliberately omitting information that she was legally compelled to give on the offences of knowingly supporting IS, and inciting or promoting the commission of a terrorist act.

On June 19, Rosna, along with her husband Radin Imran Radin Mohd Yassin, 62, Radin Romyullah and his two siblings, Farhah Sobrina Radin Imran, 23, and Mariah Radin Imran, 19, were charged at the Johor Baru Sessions Court with terrorism related offences.

On Sept 24, Sessions Court judge Rasidah Roslee granted the prosecution's application to transfer all the cases to the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Rasidah ordered Radin Imran and Radin Romyullah to be detained at the Sungai Buloh Prison; Rosna and Farhah Sobrin at the Kajang Prison and Mariah to undergo a mental health evaluation at the Permai Hospital in Johor Baru.

On May 17 at 2.54am, a 21-year-old man stormed the Ulu Tiram police station and killed Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24.

Another police officer, Mohd Hanif Roslan, was critically injured.

The attacker, identified as Radin Luqman Radin Imran, was shot dead.
