5,000kg of smuggled pig carcasses worth RM205,000 seized, suspect arrested

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force seized 5,000 kg of pig carcasses worth approximately RM205,000 at Jalan Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz early yesterday morning.

General Operations Force Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the seizure, part of Op Taring Chiller, was carried out by a team of officers from headquarters and Battalion 9 PGA at 3.15am today.

He said during the operation, the team was patrolling when they spotted a suspicious truck.

"Upon inspecting the truck, we found over 5,000 kg of pig carcasses believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country without valid documentation.

"We also detained a 62-year-old male suspect believed to be responsible for delivering the animals to the local market.

"The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM204,800.00, and the case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953.

"The suspect and the seized goods were handed over to the Pengkalan Chepa police station for further action," he said when contacted.

In a separate operation under Op Taring Wawasan, Nik Ros Azhan said they also seized various smuggled items, including pineapple plants, cosmetics, and rice, estimated to be worth RM50,000.

He said the seizures were made in three separate locations, two in Tumpat and one in Rantau Panjang.

"The seizures involved more than 100 pineapple plants without proper documentation worth RM23,000, various beauty products valued at RM15,234, and 300 kg of rice worth RM11,200.

"The GOF will continue to intensify efforts to curb smuggling activities along the country's borders," he added.
