Seven Myanmar illegal immigrants detained in Pasir Mas

PASIR MAS: Seven illegal immigrants from Myanmar who intended to find jobs in Kuala Lumpur, were arrested shortly after they crossed the Golok river here yesterday.

The seven people included four women who were detained by members of the General Operations Force (GOF) from Eighth Battalion.

GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said its personnel were conducting Op Taring Wawasan when they spotted a car in Kampung Senor.

"After stopping the vehicle, the officers managed to detain seven foreigners, but the driver escaped on foot.

"Further checks were done and all the passengers failed to produce any travel documents," he said in a statement.

Initial investigation showed that the seven people entered Kelantan via illegal jetties along the border.

"They crossed over to the Golok river and were on their way to work in Kuala Lumpur."

He said the foreigners have been handed over to the Jeram Perdah police station for further action.

In another development, Nik Ros Azhan said GOF members seized 400kg of smuggled rice worth RM21,600 in Tumpat yesterday.

No one was arrested in the noon operation at Kampung Jubakar.
