KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched a probe into an alleged threat sent to Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the mufti was at his office at Bangunan Dato Mahmud Mat in Kangar, Perlis at 8.56am on Saturday when he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number.
The mufti, he said, received four messages linked to Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISB).
The content of the messages, said Razarudin, revolved around how the company could not be challenged in the country.
Razarudin said when Mohd Asri ignored the messages, the individual sent another message, threatening and provoking him.
"The complainant believed that the messages were threatening in nature as the words 'kafir harbi' were used.
"He lodged a report at the Kangar police station on Sept 21 and we opened an investigation for criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code," he said.
He said efforts were underway to identify and arrest the suspect.
Three days ago, Mohd Asri said the Perlis Fatwa Committee had issued a fatwa deeming GPerlis Fatwa Committee had issued a fatwa deeming G
Mohd Asri said that the fatwa was issued after the committee received compelling evidence.
He said that the "batiniah" (esoteric) elements in GISBH's teachings were a continuation of the teachings of the deviant al-Arqam group.
Perlis is so far the only state to declare GISB as a deviant group.
GISB is now the subject of a police investigation after 402 people, many of whom children, were rescued from 20 welfare homes linked to the organisation on Sept 11.
Police said checks on the rescued children suggested signs of abuse, neglect as well as physical and emotional injuries.
Police also claimed that some children had been sodomised.
GISB has since denied the allegations of child exploitation and sexual abuse.
