KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force Southeast Brigade has managed to stop an attempt to smuggle 600kg of sugar with an estimated value of RM18,680 near Kampung Pulau Ular, Tumpat yesterday.
Its commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the seizure occurred at 9am after a 9th Batallion personnel conducting a patrol came across a man driving a Proton Waja in a suspicious manner who then stopped the car by the roadside and escaped into the bushes.
"Inspection of the car revealed 600 packs of sugar believed to be smuggled to Thailand, which were handed over to the related authorities for further action under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961," he said in a statement today.
He added that the 7th Batallion had seized alcohol worth RM1,440 at an illegal jetty in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas at 1pm yesterday after personnel on duty came across several men offloading boxes on the banks of Sungai Golok.
"The men immediately ran towards Thailand when they realised the presence of the police personnel and an inspection of the area revealed six boxes filled with alcohol believed to have been smuggled in for local markets.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Food Act 1983, and the seized goods have been handed to Komtak Taman Bakti for further action," he said. - BERNAMA
