Sugar heist: Young woman's sugar smuggling attempt soured by GOF

TUMPAT: A young woman was arrested by the General Operations Force (GOF) while trying to smuggle 140kg sugar to Thailand yesterday.

The sugar, classified as a controlled item by the Malaysian government, was discovered hidden under the back passenger seat of her car.

GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the 23-year-old woman was detained at Paija illegal jetty here about 6pm.

"The GOF personnel were conducting their Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan when they notice a car parked near the illegal jetty.

"After checking the car, they discovered the sugar, weighing about 140kg inside the car.

"They then arrested the driver, a 23-year-old young woman," he said in a statement.

Initial investigations revealed that the woman was acting as a transporter, intending to deliver the sugar to buyers in Thailand. The sugar is valued at over RM400.

In a separate incident, Ros Azhan said that GOF personnel also detained four illegal immigrants, including a baby boy, in Gual Tinggi, Rantau Panjang last night.

The group was traveling in a Perodua Myvi when they were arrested about 10pm.
