'Wira Tempang' among 5 crippled for posing as cops to rob trader

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested five 'bogus cops' who on Thursday had assaulted and robbed a Bangladeshi man in Seksyen 25, Shah Alam.

The five men, led by a 46-year-old nicknamed Wira Tempang, were busted four days after they had robbed RM7,000 from the foreigner and stolen two mobile phones from him at the Valencia flats.

Shah Alam police chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim, said the Bangladeshi, a trader, had lodged a police report at 9.30pm on Sept 19 over the robbery.

In the incident, the victim was standing alone in front of the flat's Block E when he was assaulted by the suspects, who claimed to be policemen.

Mohd Iqbal said members of the Selangor and Shah Alam police's Special Investigation Division (D9) were deployed on Sept 23 to arrest the suspects.

He said some of the suspects, aged between 39 and 54, had criminal records.

"One of the suspects, known as Wira Tempang, worked as a car repossessor. The 46-year-old, who has a criminal record, has been remanded for a week until Sept 30," he said in a statement.

He said checks confirmed that none of the suspects were policemen.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery. The offence carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping.

It is also being probed under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a civil servant, which carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine or both upon conviction.

He urged those with information on the case to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Nawintran Selvaraja at 016-2052314.
