SIBU: A businessman's dream of owning a Ford Ranger turned into a nightmare after he was tricked into parting with RM106,680 for the truck that he never received.
District police chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, said the victim's troubles began when he saw an advertisement for the truck on Facebook on Sept 16.
The businessman, in his 40s, contacted the number listed on the advertisement via WhatsApp.
"The seller initially set a price of RM97,800, which could be paid in monthly instalments over a five-year period," said Zulkipli.
The suspect later dropped the price to RM85,000, which the victim agreed to.
The victim was asked to provide his personal details, including a photo of his MyKad, and his wife's driving licence.
Zulkipli said the victim then made 24 transactions amounting to RM106,680 to four different bank accounts purportedly owned by the suspect.
The suspect then asked the victim to transfer another RM7,800 for the delivery of the vehicle.
"The victim felt suspicious, and having realised that he had been tricked, lodged a police report."
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
